Congratulations, Ocelot! You are the 2014 March Squee Madness Champion. You destroyed the Tapir in the Squee 16 battle of the tongues, handily took out the cute-tailed Coati and singing Turtle in the Quarter and Semi Final rounds, then overcame the floating, sleepy cuteness of the Otter. Well done! What are you going to do next? Celebrate with a snack and some frolicking!
Congratulations also to Anne, who won our Bracket Tournament! Not a single bracket out of the 35 submitted was perfect, but 4 were tied for the highest bracket score, and she was randomly selected from that top group. We hope her kiddo, for whom she submitted the bracket, enjoys her membership to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium and sends us lots of photos to Squee over.
FYI, the other 3 who matched her skill at predicting the winner were Alex, Kelly, and Erin. Nice job, Squeers!
Thanks to EVERYONE who participated this year, and you especially to Mal, our Squeeveloper, and the rest of the Inner Squircle: Angela, Heather, Kelly, and Meaghan. None of this fun is possible without them.
This Otter is livin’ the life, while the Goat is really working that sweater. And with that, we have all 16 contenders for the 2014 Baby Animal March Squee Madness Champion.
Oh hello there, I didn’t see you. I’m sooo sleepy. I’m only a newborn and need lots and lots of sleep. When I get a little bigger, I’ll be able to play in the bigger tide pool, but for now, I get to sleep in this sun beam. Sometimes when I go to sleep I get scared and need to hold onto a hand so I don’t float away. That’s really scary so I hold on very tight. Maybe after my nap we can playzzzzzzzzz.
Back from the runways of fashion week, Boots models the latest in farmyard couture. He realized his dream of becoming a goat model one day when he was eating lunch and caught his reflection in the trough and thought to himself, “Boots, you’re ridiculously good looking. Maybe you could do this as a career.” Besides shopping, Boots can be found climbing trees, eating cans, and ruminating over fashion magazines. Still just a kid, he can’t wait until his horns get long enough to bedazzle like all the big boys.
On Wednesday, Round 1 begins. You’ll have two days to vote in 8 heart-wrenching matchups. Also starting Wednesday, you’ll have 48 hours to fill in and submit your own bracket to us. If you correctly predict the 2014 Squee Champion (which will be announced on March 21), you’ll be entered into a pool of names, from which we’ll choose one lucky winner to receive a membership to their local zoo or aquarium! There’s nothing we love more than providing direct access to adorable creatures near you.
One likes to swim, and one likes to run, but we’re pretty sure this Sea Lion and Ocelot are BFF’s.
Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf! Listen to me, the smallest and happiest baby sea lion around! I love to swim, and eat all the tasty fish I can find. The best part about being a sea lion is laying in the sun with my mom. Aren’t my whiskers the cutest?
Don’t you wish your kitty was cute like me? Don’t you wish your kitty was striped like me? Don’t you wish your kitty had big eyes like me? Don’t cha? (Pussycat Dolls are my jam.) I’m Santos, and ocelots like me were endangered for many years because our pretty fur was so coveted. Now we’re everywhere, ready to terrorize you with our cuteness! Some people call us dwarf leopards, because we don’t get much bigger than the kitty in your house, but we’re so much FIERCER! Raarr! Wait, is that milk from breakfast?
We are slayed by the ears on this Klipspringer, and don’t you want to roll around in the clover with a Coati? These two make 12 of our 16 March Squee Madness contenders, do you have a favorite yet?
I know, I know, my ears are really cute. Everyone tells me that. They also tell me how adorable my hooves are too. These fancy feet help me climb and jump on rocks. My pretty coat comes from eating all the vegetation I can find. I’m still really young, but I can’t wait to grow up because Klipspringers like me mate for life.
Hola! I am a tiny South American Coati, and I like to spend my days climbing trees and eating just about anything that looks tasty. My tail — oh yes, can you see it if I perk it up for you? — is ringed just like a raccoon’s, that’s because we’re related! I’ve never seen a raccoon though, because my family and I live in a zoo in Budapest. They’re not as cute as me, right? Alright bye, I have very important rolling-around-in-clover business to attend to!
Pangolin and Porcupine make weird look so, so cute.
Did you know that my name in Malay means “something that rolls up”? Well now you do! I’m a mammal but have these fun scales. Like an armadillo! But different! Let’s go eat some ants!
I try really hard to make myself understood to the humans. I almost think they can understand me. I mean I can understand me, but I’m not sure they can understand porcupine. So I keep trying with my squeaks and noms and noises that I hope sound like human noises. Can you tell me? Do I sound human? No? Fine, I’ll have another plum.
Today’s contenders are all about family: this Elephant loves her mom, and these Red Pandas just need to hug each other forever while competing to be the best they can be.
I’m not little, I’m squee-sized! I still need my mom, though, and I follow her wherever she goes. Sometimes I use my trunk to hold onto her tail. Taking baths are my favorite because I like to spray water on the others. When I get scared, I suck on my trunk and then my mom hugs me with her trunk. It’s awesome being an elephant.
Every day, baby red pandas are born without proper trees to climb, tasty treats to nom, or pumpkins to roll around in the snow. Every day, baby red pandas, just like these, go without the necessities they so desperately need, like fluffy stuffed animals to squeeze, safe playground equipment to hang from, or championship belts to wear with pride around the the zoo like the baddasses they are. With your help, these two baby red pandas can realize their dreams and win March Squee Madness to become the 2014 Squee Champion. But, first, you must reach deep into your heart and vote for them. Your votes can change their lives forever and inspire others to do the same.
The Blue Footed Booby may have the best name in the tournament, but the expression on our Gorilla friend’s face is too cute to ignore.
My friends call me the class clown, I guess that’s because of the way that I walk. But, dad says that I should be proud of my feet because that’s what’s gonna get the ladies when I’m big. I don’t know what that means. Eventually my feet will turn bright blue though and I’ll be able to fly and dive into the water just like all the others. I can’t wait!
Oh no. Oh no, I think I just tooted. Hahaha, just kidding! Being a baby gorilla is so much fun. I get to climb trees and eat fruit. I also love to play games with my friends. Will you be my friend?
What our next two contenders lack in fur, they make up for in personality. We bring you the Turtle and the Guinea Pig.
“Hello! ma baby
Hello! ma honey
Hello! ma ragtime gal
Send me a kiss by wire
Baby, ma heart’s on fire!
If you refuse me
Honey, you’ll lose me
Then you’ll be left alone
Oh, baby, telephone
And tell me I’m your own!” Boy, I sure do love show tunes! I could sing them forever and ever! I may be a little turtle but I have a HUGE singing voice. What should we sing next? I have an audition to practice for!
I might be little, but just look at me: I have big dreams. Hippo-size dreams. I’m going to grow so much fluff you won’t even recognize me and then you, my conniving little human, will pet and love me all day long, when we aren’t working towards global domination or enjoying a fine Syrah. I’ll snuggle my little bum into your lap and trill to let you know it’s real between us — don’t mind that annoying man who keeps interrupting our petting sessions yelling “Cut!” We have to prepare. We have to take your scruff and my fluff and when people stomp on us, we’ll stomp right back. Our next step? Well… we’ll reveal that on the next season of House of Cashew.
After weeks of sorting through adorable photos, arguing about the relative cuteness of downy wings versus fluffy fur, and enduring some major heat from the puggle lobby, our team of 5 Squee Experts (a.k.a. The Inner Squircle) has settled on the 16 contenders for the 2014 Baby Animal March Squee Madness Bracket. We can barely handle the cute ourselves.
For the next 8 days, we will introduce 2 contenders a day – don’t get too immersed in the rivalries yet, these are in random order. We’ll announce the Bracket on Wednesday, March 12, and the tournament will run for 4 rounds, through March 21. The days in between will be filled with joy, and with heartbreak. You may lose friends over their commitment to a hedgehog in a strawberry hat. You may forge alliances with those you once despised, because they too feel that Tawny Frogmouth was robbed. Anything can happen. It will get emotional. You have been warned.
We have a few surprises in store to raise the stakes a bit, but we’ll get to that in a few days. For now, let us introduce you to our first contenders of 2014: the Tapir and the Black Rhino.
Oh boy am I glad to see you! I almost didn’t make it to this year’s bracket. Being born is tough stuff, but thanks to some amazing people at the Nashville Zoo performing mouth-to-snout resuscitation, I’m here to show you all my stripes and swagger. These days I like to enjoy life by zipping laps around the barn and getting these lovely humans to scratch my belly. I’ve been told that I’ll lose these markings when I grow up, but I don’t wanna! Adults are boring! Pbbbbt!!
Hi, I’m Maalim, one of the smallest baby rhinos they have ever seen at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. When I first got there I was only 8 inches tall! I was abandoned by my mom, but was saved and named after the ranger who found me. Sheldrick is great because they feed me milk, and give me a nice soft mattress to sleep on. I’ve even gotten used to the all the elephants running around. OK, I gotta go, time for my nap (which is why I need my blankie).
It’s almost time for the 2014 Baby Animal March Squee Madness Bracket.
We know you’re excited. Keep an eye on Twitter as we gear up.
